About
IRB Barcelona is a leading institution engaged in basic and applied biomedical research. Founded in 2005 by the Government of Catalonia and the University of Barcelona (UB), IRB is located in the Barcelona Science Park (PCB). RB Barcelona hosts 29 research groups organized across three main programmes: Cancer Science, Aging and Metabolism, and Mechanisms of Disease. It employs over 400 researchers from 40 nationalities, including more than 100 PhD candidates. IRB has earned the prestigious Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence designation four times consecutively, affirming its consistent leadership in Spanish and European science. It is a founding member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and part of the Catalan Research Centres (CERCA) system.
Research is supported by 9 advanced in-house core facilities, as well as high-throughput platforms and services from the Barcelona Science Park and University of Barcelona. The institute’s computational infrastructure includes over 350 CPU cores, 7 GPUs, and dedicated access to the MareNostrum Supercomputer at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. IRB researchers also benefit from access to the CNAG sequencing platform.
IRB Barcelona runs a competitive PhD programme launched in 2008, hosting around 100 fellows on average. It has extensive experience in EU-funded doctoral and institutional training initiatives, having participated in MSCA-COFUND programmes and MSCA-ITNs underlines IRB’s strategic role in nurturing scientific talent and advancing biomedical research in Europe
