About
EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is one of the six sites of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), an intergovernmental organisation founded in 1974 and headquartered in Heidelberg. With over 20 member states and thousands of scientists and engineers, EMBL is a powerhouse of biological expertise, dedicated to advancing molecular biology research in Europe, training the next generation of scientists, and developing cutting-edge technologies.
As Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences, EMBL-EBI drives innovation in genomic analysis, systems biology, and data-driven biology. Its open-access databases span the full spectrum of molecular biology, from gene expression to chemical biology. EMBL-EBI also hosts PRIDE, the world-leading public repository for mass spectrometry-based proteomics data.
The institute has a strong tradition of researcher development, training an average of 40 PhD students and nearly 50 postdocs annually. EMBL has played a major role in EU-funded programmes, including dozens of MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships and Doctoral Networks under Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe. Through initiatives like EIPOD, ARISE, and MSCA-NIGHT, EMBL continues to lead in both scientific discovery and international research training.
