About
University Hospital Heidelberg (UKHD) is one of Germany’s leading academic medical centers, integrated within the dynamic Heidelberg Life Science Campus and affiliated with Heidelberg University. UKHD fosters close collaborations with world-renowned institutions including EMBL, DKFZ, and the BioQuant Center, promoting interdisciplinary excellence in translational and systems medicine.
The hospital offers state-of-the-art research infrastructure, encompassing high-throughput omics laboratories, digital microscopy, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, and advanced neuropathology and histopathology units. These are complemented by powerful computational platforms for large-scale biomedical data analysis. UKHD also benefits from its role in the Health + Life Science Alliance, which provides expanded access to regional infrastructure and expertise.
All research is conducted in purpose-built laboratories fully owned by UKHD and tailored to integrate clinical, experimental, and computational approaches. The institution has a strong track record in European doctoral training programmes, having participated in numerous MSCA ITNs under Horizon 2020 in areas such as systems medicine and clinical bioinformatics. It is currently involved in Horizon Europe Doctoral Networks focusing on AI for health, multi-omics integration, and neurological disease mechanisms, underscoring its continued leadership in shaping next-generation biomedical research talent.
